Characteristics of School
Management & Organization: Our school has been practising school-based management for many years and we have recently established our Incorporated Management Committee, which encompasses representatives of teachers, parents, alumni as well as delegates from the sponsoring body. This arrangement strengthens communication between teachers, parents, students and the school board.
Learning & Teaching: To enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of learning, Chinese is adopted as the medium of instruction. Besides, we tailor-make Chinese, English and Mathematics learning materials for our students. In this school year, we plan to focus on ways to improve the efficiency and the effectiveness of teaching. Our foremost tasks are therefore (1) to increase students’ self confidence and help them to build positive self-images, and to enrich their learning experiences; (2) to strengthen students’ basic skills; (3) to arouse students’ interest in learning, improve their soft skills and inspire them to think for themselves; (4) to improve students’ examination skills; and (5) to develop new senior-secondary programmes to better accommodate the different abilities, interests and needs of students.
School Ethos & Support to Students: We emphasize the importance of moral education and thus demand a high level of discipline from our students. Through various continuous counseling schemes and activities, e.g. “Light of Dawn” Remedial Scheme, Volunteer Training Scheme, Adventure-based Counseling and Leadership Training, we hope students would develop good ethics and discipline, as well as the ability to face and overcome adversities positively. To promote parent-teacher cooperation in helping student growth and development, we assign two class teachers to each class from S1 to S5. This allows more frequent communication with parents and also better support to students.
Academic & Non-academic Performance:
In 2006, our students obtained a total of 59 distinctions and credits in the HKCEE; in the same year, the best individual performance attained in the HKALE was 2 B. Approximately 82% of our S7 graduates continued their studies in tertiary institutes taking diploma/ associate degree/ degree courses. The result was satisfactory. Besides, our students have achieved remarkably good results in extra-curricular activities, especially those that are sport-related. The school has won the Outstanding School Award in Jing Ying Team Competition for three years in a row and it is the second year that our school’s soccer team became the champion in Jing Ying Football Tournament. Performances in other activities were also outstanding. Last year, students from our school were awarded “Best Sales Technique” and “Best Stall Design” in the 2006 International Trade Fair for Virtual Enterprises, came second in the Teachers’ Day 2005 Short Video Competition organized by Chinese University of Hong Kong, third in the “Remote-controlled Solar Car” category of the Inter-school Solar Car Science Challenge 2005 and in the senior section of the Inter-School Electronic Orienteering/Virtual Flight Competition…etc.
Policy on Medium of Instruction: Chinese is adopted as the medium of instruction here to make learning more effective and efficient, and we tailor-make Chinese Language and English Language learning materials for our students. The “Two Languages, Three Dialects” policy is realized through the use of information technology, the implementation of reading schemes and the organization of various activities/competitions which help to arouse students’ interest in language learning.
Policy on Curriculum: Apart from emphasizing the importance of the “Two Languages, Three Dialects” language policy and the use of information technology, we try our best to offer students a large variety of up-to-date subjects which we believe to be useful to them, such as Liberal Studies, Travel & Tourism, Commerce and Principles of Accounts. This could arouse their interest in learning and help them immensely in their future paths, whether they choose to continue their studies or to start working immediately after graduation. We also encourage students to “take learning out of the classroom” so that they could really learn how to learn. Hence we often arrange different kinds of visits and activities for our students and sometimes even internship opportunities at outside firms or organizations to allow students a chance to widen their horizons and put what they have learnt into practice.
Policy on Academic Assessments: We adopt a continuous evaluation system, with one uniform test and one examination in each term. Besides, quizzes, homework and classwork are assigned to students throughout the year to help them reinforce their learning.
Support Measure for Academically Gifted/Under-privileged Students: This aims at catering for the different learning needs of students to facilitate better learning. We take care of both academically gifted and under-privileged students. For specific subjects, arrangements have been made such that students in the same form have lessons during the same period, making it possible to re-group them according to their ability. Besides, there are after-school support groups for junior form students and extra lessons for senior form students so as to reinforce regular classroom learning. Our teachers would also give extra attention to individual students after class if deemed necessary.
Policy on Class Promotion /Detention: Using a system of class promotion trials, make-up examinations and summer review classes to accommodate different situations.
Teaching & Learning in Information Technology: The school-wide networking system with broadband Internet connection allows all teachers and students to link up to the school server and the internet from anywhere on campus. Students are encouraged to make use of information technology to learn, so as to enrich their knowledge and increase their interest in learning. Also, we have been replacing/ adding some equipment and working to promote IT education, e.g. purchasing extra LCD projection systems, promoting wi-fi technology, building an e-learning platform and organizing related educational activities for parents.
Whole School Approach to Catering for Student Diversity: Our school has implemented an integrated education programme that includes personal development schemes, training camps and integrated learning activities.
Training and Development for Teachers: In order to satisfy the growing demands in our society, our teachers are most keen on taking part in different forms of education-related activities to better equip themselves. In the past school year, our teachers had attained an average of 94.1 hours of training, which was much higher than the 50 hours stated in the advisory guidelines from the Advisory Committee on Teacher Education and Qualifications. Peer observation also plays a key role in staff development as it gives teachers a chance to learn from each other and exchange ideas on teaching.
Focus of the Year and Future Development: To reinforce moral and civic education; to improve teaching efficiency; and to increase the public’s and parent’s understanding of the school.
